Just wait till those kids get older!

Strangers.

They say the darndest things, don’t they? If you go out in public with 3 girls, I betcha at least one person will say something along the lines of, “I sure wouldn’t want to be in your shoes when they’re teenagers!” From the time you’re expecting your first baby, the people around you fill up a giant bucket of fear that somehow the simple act of growing up is going to turn your child into a monster.

1398318_10153440322415644_1618955214_o

“You think a newborn is hard? Wait till the terrible twos!”

“Terrible twos? That’s a piece of cake compared to terrible TWEENS!”

And the ever present, “When those girls are teenagers – oh man are you going to be in trouble!”

Yeeaah. When Artist was a newborn, I was a mess with knowing she was going to grow up fast. A big part of that, honestly, had nothing to do with comments from others. I LOOVED the newborn stage. I mean it was sometimes hellishly hard. I had no idea at the time what a high-need baby she was. At nine months I still averaged three to four hours of sleep a night….and not consecutive. But ohΒ  to snuggle my precious baby girl and kiss her fuzzy head…nothing could be better. πŸ˜€

And then a crazy thing happened. At two months old, she started giggling! It was the most adorable thing, and I thought, “Okay this is perfection, if only she could stay at this stage forever.” Then there was her first word, “Mama!” To hear my baby call me by name – heaven on earth!

1936904_245677140643_3264855_nSoon she started walking, and talking, and dancing! She astounded us with her cleverness and melted out hearts with her hugs! We thought, she’s so perfect…should we even have another, because how could another baby be as wonderful as she is? And then we did. And of course Boo proved to us that another baby can be just as perfect in a completely different way (and that someΒ  babies can sleep through the night at a few months old). πŸ˜‰

AndΒ  we got to see Artist become a big sister, and that was beautiful, too! And I thought, if I could just save this, right now…a toddler and a newborn, this is perfection, nothing could beat this!

But time flies and babies grow up. Artist began developing talents and passions. She started making art, and listening to stories, and using her imagination, and playing with her sister…and it was wonderful! (I’m not saying parenting littles isn’t incredibly hard, I’m just saying it’s also wonderful!)

257577_10150651011960644_1252230_oAnd yes, we went through a bit of a rough patch when she was first diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder and began having five therapy sessions a week. But soon after that, she learned to read…and she loved it, and that was awesome! (She also finally started falling asleep on her own, so that was great, too.)

She decided she wanted to be a fashion designer and a rock star! She put on concerts for us and began spending hours at a time with her sketchΒ  book, drawing elaborate outfits. She became a protective sister, making sure Boo didn’t head toward the street or talk to strangers or pick up spiders.

Smiles was born and Artist became my helper, bringing me water and baby blankets and even making me coffee! So, score – obviously! She learned to sew. She became a science whiz. She became interested in baking and able to lead Boo through making cookies together all by themselves!

IMG_9419She started reading books IΒ  love, and now we can talk about all our favorite parts! She started specifically wanting to hang out with me just to chat. She learned to play strategy games that are actually fun for me…and beat me at them. She got permission to sometimes get up after Boo is asleep and watch cheesy Disney channel shows with me, and eat fudge. πŸ™‚

At some point she started really talking to me about God. At night I sneak some time with just her (and some time with just Boo), doing individual devotions with each of them. Artist prays with me about the things that are on her heart. She tells me her greatest fears. We memorize verses together. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

IMG_9431c

Just over a week ago, she told me she wanted to be baptized! Yesterday I got to watch my amazing girl stand up in front of our entire church and share how she’d felt God urging her to be baptized and that following God is important to her, so she chose to take that step of faith!

I watched her sign her name on the baptismal (a tradition at our church), and step into the water, and get baptized. I got to see her eyes sparkling with excitement at having taken that step. Friends and family gathered to cheer her on, and we all celebrated the milestone.

IMG_8466cAnd I realized I’m not scared of her growing up into some sort of teenage monster. I’m not worried that when they get older, having three girls will be awful (four if Apple is a girl).

Yes, I’m absolutely trying to cherish the moments. I realize now more than ever how fast babies grow up, and I hope to be even better than before about savoring each day. But not with a sense of, I’d better enjoy it now because I’ll wish I could go back to these days later when I can’t stand to be around my girls and they’re horrible people who make my life miserable because they hate me.

These days, I’d rather go somewhere withΒ  Artist than by myself. In fact, I was just thinking that I really wish instead of flying to NYC by myself I was taking Artist with me. She’s a joy to be around.

I’m not saying she’s perfect and never has mood swings or always wants to clean her room or anything like that…she’s human. So am I.

I just wish I’d known eight years ago what a wonderful journey watching my babies grow up would be. And I wish people would stop saying negative things about it. They don’t know myΒ  girls. I’m pretty sure most of them have no experience with a family of girls, they’re simple making assumptions – probably significantly based on mean girls on TV shows. And from now on, when I meet families with girls, I hope to grin and say, “Just wait till they grow up…they’re such a joy!”

Upcoming Awesomeness in the form of BOOKS!

So, Rae Carson’s Walk on Earth a Stranger came out a few weeks ago and was awesome, except that I can’t even cope with having to wait a year to find out what happens next! Magnus Chase, Rick Riordan’s latest book came out last week. I’m reading it now, and it’s great so far. Rick Riordan is the only author I know whose chapter titles are half the fun of the book!Β  This fall/winter is apparently the season of ALL THE AWESOME BOOKS because there are so many more that are about to be out, too! Though, there are lots coming in the spring as well so maybe that’s every season. Whatever. πŸ˜‰

Awesome Books - Running With SpearsI can’t wait for Winter, the conclusion to “The Lunar Chronicles” on Nov. 10th! I’ve been hooked since I read Cinder. SO good! YA retellings of fairy tales in completely original ways + dystopian future without a love triangle = score!

The Key to Extraordinary by Natalie Lloyd should be out on February 23, 2016. I’ll be pre-ordering it both as an e-book so I can read it immediately and hardcover, in case I ever get to meet Natalie and have her sign it. Her book A Snicker of Magic was my absolute, all time favorite book I’ve ever read outloud to my girls! Natalie is such a great storyteller with her whimsy and quirk and just a little magic. πŸ™‚

Awesome Authors - Running With SpearsHappily Ever After: Companion to the Selection Series byΒ  Kiera Cass is coming out tomorrow (Oct. 13th) and will tide me over until “The Crown” the 5th and final book in the series comes out next May. I was surprised to enjoy the series because it’s more romance focused for a dystopian series than I typically enjoy, but her writing is the type that grabs ahold of you and just won’t let you set the book down until you’re done. Plus Kiera is awesome. She let me take a selfie with her when I met her at a conference this past spring!

Rush Revere and the Star-Spangled Banner by Rush Limbaugh is coming October 27, 2015. My girls loved learning about the pilgrims in the first book in this series. History told in the form of a guy who rides a talking, time-traveling horse is pretty fun!

And it’s not a book to read, but I’m still super excited about Harry Potter: The Coloring Book from Scholastic coming out on November 24, 2015. I really don’t have to say anything about this, do I? It’s awesomeness is self-evident. πŸ˜€

Now I just have to wait 24 more days for Starbucks red cups and their delicious Toffee Nut Latte, because nothing goes better with books than coffee!

Dixit

I don’t know if you know this about us, but we are a family of serious gamers! Back in our pre-kid days, Misteris and I would play Guild Wars on our computers from the second we were both home in the evening until we absolutely had to crash around 1 or 2am, stopping only to toss a Totino’s Party Pizza in the oven when we got hungry! When we expanded our gaming into the world of tabletop games, we maintained our zeal, enthusiasm, geekiness. πŸ˜‰

Given that, while our kids aren’t quite ready to engage in an epic 6 hour Arkham Horror battle, we’re not willing to settle for playing Chutes and Ladders or Sorry with them all day, either. Our compromise has consisted of games like Catan: Junior, Zombie Dice, and Castle Panic.

Zombie Dice is is our go-to quickΒ  game, and Castle Panic is awesome because it’s cooperative (though we do tend to play with some house rules that give us a better chance of surviving against the monsters), but our newest game, Dixit, is the sock-rocking awesomest game I’ve found yet!

Dixit, the perfect family game for everyone from pre-readers through adults! Simple rules, no reading required, but incredibly fun and challenging! - Running With Spears

From the Manufacturer:
The players have hands of oversized cards with various artistic pictures. The active player secretly selects one of his cards and gives a very brief description. The other players secretly select their own cards which match the description. The chosen cards are shuffled and revealed, then players vote on which was chosen by the active player. Each correct answer gives points to the guesser and the active player. Each incorrect answer gives points to the player who submitted the guessed card. However, if all of the guesses are correct — or none of them are — then the active player gets no points and all the other players get points.

The most splendrous feature of Dixit is the fact that pre-readers such as Boo can play it without any help because there’s no reading required! Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Doesn’t that mean it’s super simple and lame?” To which I can only reply, “Do squirrels burp?” (No, they don’t.) πŸ˜‰

I was actually introduced to Dixit by my sister and her husband who play it with their adult friends, so it’s absolutely not just a simple kids’ game.

The one downside is that the single deck of cards that it comes with gets old pretty quickly. If 6 people are playing you can easily go through the entire thing in a single game and have to shuffle the discard pile and play the same cards again. Considering the fact that you’re making up descriptions for the cards, having to re-use a card that someone else already described isn’t the most awesome.

The solution is fairly simple, they sell additional decks for around $20 a piece. We bought two, and I’m really happy with them. But, yeah…it’s pricey, especially if you’re used to buying games that cost $15 total and you’re done.

I guess there’s actually one other drawback to Dixit, which is the 6 player maximum. Unlike other games where you can simply grab a token from another game to add additional players, working in more players for Dixit would require quite a bit of work. Once again, they sell a “fix” for the problem, a 12 player version of the game. Unfortunately, it’s $40. As a (soon to be) family of 6, I should have just bought the 12 player version to start with for when we want to play with friends, but having already paid $20 for the initial game, I’m not super keen on shelling out the additional dough at this point.

I suppose there’s also one caveat…not necessarily a negative, but this is NOT a game you can play with only 2 people, and it’s most fun with 4 or more.

Dixit, the perfect family game for everyone from pre-readers through adults! Simple rules, no reading required, but incredibly fun and challenging! - Running With SpearsI super love it anyway, though! All the artwork is so interesting, I mean if I were a bit more on the ball I could totally incorporate the game into an art unit study, or at the very least mention different styles of art that each card fits into as we’re playing.

It’s also a fantastic game for developing higher-order thinking for kids (and challenges me, as well). Boo started out understanding the artwork on her card and applying that understanding by describing it nearly exactly. For example, if she had a card with a golden hourglass that was broken and had dust spilling out and a moon overhead she would say something like, “A thing that’s broken and gold dust spilling and a moon above.” The problem was that then everyone would be able to guess which card was hers and she wouldn’t get any points. As we’ve continued to play she’s gotten much better at analyzing the card and creating a more indefinite description such as, “Moonlight and gold.” Now, depending on what cards other people have to play that turn, her description still may or may not be vague enough to throw people off, but she’s definitely getting there! And half the time I have difficulty coming up with anything better myself without running the risk of being so vague that nobodyΒ  guesses my card.

Anyhoozles, there’s my 2 cents about the game in case anybody cares. I think I could play it every day, it’s that fun. Though I’d probably have to end up buying even more expansions. Hmm.Β  Anyway, if you didΒ  ask me what game I most recommend to play as a family, I’d tell you Dixit, hands down! I’d also tell you to try Brown Sugar Crumble Donut Coffee, because – YUM! But that really has nothing to do with this post, except that I’m gonna go have some now. You should, too. Seriously!Β  πŸ˜€

SPD Friendly Halloween Costumes!

So, my girls LOOVE Halloween, dressing up, going to a festival, and beginning last year even trick-or-treating around our neighborhood (my typically timid sweeties actually went up and knocked on doors, what?!?!Β  Moral of the story = candy is a really powerful motivator). πŸ˜‰

SPD friendly Halloween costumes | Running With Spears #halloween #spdIMG_2720But when even every day clothing has to be all soft cotton with nothing rough or itchy, finding costumes can be a challenge. Last year Artist was a fashion designer with a costume she created herself, and Boo was an archer with a cloak we made from a soft fleece blankie. The girls LOVED their costumes and we all had a good time making them together for the first hour, and then the rest of the work was delegated to me. Yay. (Please note the dripping sarcasm.)Β

Our first thought this year was to actually do a family costume. Misteris and I would be Heather and Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon, and the girls would all be dragons. There are lots of tutorials on making dragon costumes from hoodies. Awesome, right? Soft, comfy costumes…score!

But here’s the thing. I just really don’t feel like putting hours and hours into creating costumes this year. Plus it was going to end up pretty pricey. Ok fine, that’s 2 things, whatever.

In the end, we decided to go a much simpler/cheaper route.

Wild cats! πŸ˜€

SPD friendly Halloween costumes | Running With Spears #halloween #spd

We found Artist a skirt and tank top from Old Navy and Boo a dress from Target. Ordered ears and “babies” from Amazon, already had the grey boots, and Artist needed new boots for this winter anyway. On Halloween, we’ll take an eyeliner pen and give them a cat’s nose and whiskers to complete the look.

Badabing, cheap, comfy, no sew costumes!

And there you have it! Happiness all around. No itching. New clothes they can wear whenever (I got Artist a black long sleeve shirt to wear with her skirt this fall). And most importantly I don’t have to make anything!Β

IMG_9271cMaybe it’s not the most original costume anyone’s ever thought of, but we’re not trying to win any awards.

Oh, and Smiles is a jaguar. She was too busy sliding to be in the pic.

Anyhoozles, Happy October! I hope my laziness um, creativity?Β  has been inspiring. Or something. Yeah. Well, time to go consume all the pumpkin spice things…but especially coffee! Later, gators!

the ring came back

Now, this is a story all about how a ring got lost, then showed back up…or something…yeah.

πŸ˜‰

IMG_7781softccSo last Friday, Misteris was mowing the lawn because he’s awesome like that, and when he had to add more gasoline to the mower, he put his ring in his back pocket so it wouldn’t get dirty. Now, he’s been putting his ring there when he takes it off for over 10 years with nary a problem. But you see, we gave each other new rings for our 10th anniversary in May, and they’ve proven to be slippery little buggers.

A few days after we got them, I was at a writers conference where I lost my ring in the bathroom while washing my hands. I panicked moments later when I noticed it missing, went back to the bathroom where the awesome janitor who was cleaning the bathroom helped me look through the trash and we found it inside a paper towel.Β  Another time, Misteris was holding it for me while I was rubbing salve on Smile’s skin to help her eczema and he somehow lost it, something to do with a kid puking or some such…fortunately we found it after about half an hour of searching the house.

Anyhoo, on Friday when Misteris finished mowing and checked his pants, the ring was missing. I double checked to make sure it wasn’t hiding in his pocket, then we both searched the yard to no avail. Eventually, Misteris deemed it a lost cause and we slunched inside. (Slunch = slump + hunch) πŸ™‚

I never fully lost hope, though. I prayed it would miraculously show back up, and kept looking outside expecting to see a bird find it in the yard and fly up to the window where it would tap lightly to get my attention and then set it in my hands when I went out.

Alas, no birds ever came. But Monday morning, something exciting didΒ  happen. I found the lost ring sitting just inside the dryer!!! (By “found” I mean, I looked down and there it was.)

So I know what you’re thinking. How in the world did you guys both miss the ring in the pants pocket? That just doesn’t make any sense at all. And I agree. It doesn’t. Which is why I’m convinced that can’t have been what happened. I’m pretty sure there’s a much better explanation.

dashOur cat, Dash, must have overheard talk of our troubles and determined to help out. He began keeping an eye out for an opportunity to dart into the backyard and search for the ring himself, having the obvious advantages of cat eyesight, and a much closer to the ground vantage point.

He thought he’d found his chance on Saturday when friends were here and the kids kept running in and out and forgetting to close the door. Misteris, however, saw Dash eyeing the door and closed him in another room.

Frustrated but not defeated, Dash continued watching and waiting for his chance. Luckily, the very next night, as we were all caught up in the excitement of the eclipse, the door was several times left not only wide open, but also thoroughly un-watched.

True to his name, he dashed out into the yard and raced about searching for the ring until he found it! πŸ™‚

He darted back inside with the ring and placed it in front of his water bowl, knowing Misteris would refresh it the next morning, see the ring, and praise Dash for his heroic efforts. Unfortunately, Misteris was thoroughly exhausted from our long weekend the next morning and stumbled off to work without attending to the cats’ water. When I got up and noticed the cats trying to drink water from the kitchen sink, I was exhausted as well and rather than actually go refill their bowl I simply set a small dish of water out for them in the kitchen.

Dismayed at the lack of our discovery of the ring and subsequent lavishing of praises upon Dash that he expected, Dash shuffled off and retrieved the ring himself. As he was searching for the perfect, super obvious, no way I could miss it, spot to place the ring, I became distracted while doing laundry and left the dryer open. He jumped up into the dryer and carefully placed the ring at the very edge where surely I would see it.

Finally, his plan worked! I “found” the ring. My first thought was that I must have washed it, and my second thought was to contact Misteris and share the awesome news. So poor Dash still didn’t receive the praise he most certainly deserved. Fortunately for Dash, as I considered the events later I realized what must have happened. After all, in the entire decade we’ve known him, he’s never before jumped into the dryer, so what other explanation could there possibly be.

Thanks Dash. You may sometimes be lazy, stubborn, and even crotchety, but finding that ring was super awesome of you! And thanks, God, for the miracle of getting our ring back…after all, that much of the story is 100% true. Not that the part about Dash has any chance of not being accurate or anything. πŸ˜‰
