Email for Kids – Review!

My girls love sending and receiving their own emails with our Annual Subscription to KidsEmail.org.

What it is:

Safe email for Kids - KidsEmail.org | Review by Running With Spears #kidsemail #emailforkidsKidsEmail.org is a program designed to give kids a chance to connect with others via email without parents having to worry about their safety! You just set up an email address for your kid and they log in and send and receive mail, but you  get to have control over who they contact (and who contacts them).  There are a bunch of parental controls that you can set for each child such as whether or not you want them to send or receive mail from anyone other than the people on their contact list, if you want your kids to be able to add anyone to their contact list themselves, whether attachments or images are allowed, etc. There seriously wasn’t a single safety issue I could think of that you don’t have the ability to control. There are also free apps available for apple devices, android devices, and kindle fire devices. Wow I just used the word devices a lot! I feel like I should talk about literary devices now. Or coffee devices. Is that a thing? Sorry, I digress.  😉 A few of the other features of KidsEmail.org include optional time restrictions and a GPS tracker with the mobile app that can show you where your kids have been.

How we use it:

KidsEmail - Letting Kids connect through email while Parents keep them safe. | Review by Running With Spears #kidsemail I created an email account for my 9 year old, Artist, selecting the “teen” option which gave her an email address with @kmail  instead of @kidsemail  as well as an older kid look and feel. To start with, I went ahead and turned on most of the safety settings, and then put her dad and myself, my parents, and one friend who also has email as her contacts. She immediately went into her settings and chose a background that she liked, and then started sending a bunch of emails off to everyone.

I also put the app for KidsEmail.org  on her phone, and that quickly became her favorite way to send emails because she could easily attach pictures she took. Soon Boo, who can’t read yet, wanted in on the fun too so I set up an account for her, but this time I selected the “very simple” option  that’s designed for younger kids and has a simplified layout.

What we think:

Safe and fun email program for Kids - KidsEmail.org | Review by Running With Spears #kidsemail #emailforkidsI’d forgotten how much fun it could be just to send and receive emails. Artist thought it was awesome, and I think my parents were rather tickled, too. I love all the security options. After I gave my parents the contact info for my girls, my Mom sent an email from a different address than I’d added to my girls’ contacts, and I received a notification that someone was attempting to contact my daughter and then was able to approve the message. I loved the ability to personally determine whether the message was safe! Boo loves that she can attach doodles she creates with their paint feature. Artist is excited that she has a way to get in touch with her friend. And having email addresses for my girls came in handy for me because one of the sites we’re using this year for school has an option to send assignments via email. I’m also very happy with the customer service at KidsEmail.org. We ran into a glitch one day and received a very prompt, helpful response! I really love knowing that a company cares about my experience and is happy to help me out if I need them to!

You can try it free to see what you think. I wasn’t sure my girls were even old enough to care about having email, but they love it, and I love that I know they’re safe, so I imagine that when our Annual Subscription  is up, we’ll pay to renew. 🙂

Mom Hack Monday – Dessert

Today’s hack is brought to you by my friend Shelby! She commented on one of my restaurant hack posts, “Feed the kids dinner at home at normal dinner time. About an hour later go out to dinner with the whole family. Dad & mom get dinner, kids get dessert. Everyone’s happy! (bonus points if you get snotty looks or comments from people who think you’re raising spoiled sugarholics! )”

Restaurant with kids hack = Feed the kids dinner at home at normal dinner time. About an hour later go out to dinner with the whole family. Dad & mom get dinner, kids get dessert. Everyone’s happy! | Running With Spears #parenthacksI thought that was just about the most genius idea ever…especially since there are a ton of restaurants that I’d love to go to, but they don’t serve anything all my kids will eat. 😀

She also shared, about my bendy-straw idea, “I always had a small pair of fold-up scissors and cut them down.”

I totally used to do that, but then I decided the bendy-straws worked even better at preventing the whole titled cup spilled lemonade situation…but I really need to still keep scissors with me, too, because the other day I got to a restaurant and realized we’d used up all the straws in my bag and I forgot to add more! Oops!

Thanks for the great hacks, Shelby!

Everybody else, throw your best Mom (or Dad) hacks at me, and I’ll share them soon!

Be sure to check out the hacks I’ve shared so far. I’ll share more tips next Mom Hack Monday in 2 weeks – right now I’m alternating with my family fun night ideas. Family Fun Friday – Exploding Kittens

Games to play with the whole family that are ACTUALLY fun for everyone! | Running With SpearsToday’s game is one of our current favorites because it’s quick, simple and hilarious!

Exploding Kittens is described as “a card game for people who are into kittens and explosions and laser beams and sometimes goats,”  which is a small small taste of the satirical humor you’ll find on the cards. It’s a game of strategy and chance that my 6 year old (who can’t read yet) can play on her own now, after a couple times of being on my team and becoming familiar with the cards. Basically, you draw a card every turn, and when you get an exploding kitten card, unless you can diffuse it, you’re out of the round. There’s enough strategy to make it fun for adults, unlike Uno  or heaven forbid Go Fish  that make me nearly lose my mind with boredom. Of course, the hilarious illustrations and captions on the cards add a lot, as well.

I just saw that there’s an expansion coming out next month, which I’m sure we’ll get! Yay! 😀

Be sure to check out the other games I’ve shared!

I plan to share another game we love next Family Fun Friday – which will probably be in 2 weeks, right now I’m alternating with my “Mom Hacks” posts. DITL – Eclectic Homeschool Style

Hi guys! So we “started school” yesterday — after a two week summer break. 😀

We don’t always do school through the summer, but we did this year cause we’d taken off time in the spring when baby Apple was born, plus we had a few things to review for the Homeschool Review Crew.

I can hardly believe we’re in our fifth year of homeschooling now, and my girls are 9, almost 7, almost 3, and half-a-year old!!!! School looks quite a bit different now than it did when I was just starting out and I had two kids who were in kinder and pre-school. For better or worse, I’m pretty sure I care less now, lol. But we still have the same motto…do whatever works for us!

Day in the life on an eclectic homeschooling family! | Running With Spears #homeschool #unschool #delightdirected #studentled

I thought it would be fun to share how our day went…but barely got a chance to sit down to write, so forgive me for not having a nice polished post.

Start of school supplies for eclectic homeschool | Running With SpearsI’ve made it a tradition to start the year with a handful of new goodies. I didn’t grab an many as usual this year because I’d just  bought new art supplies for the video art lessons we’ve been doing. And we have a bunch of stuff that we’d either received recently, or will be receiving soon to review as well.

What do YOU want to be when you grow up? | Running With Spears - homeschooling preschool! #homeschool Our other start of school tradition is to take pics of each girl holding a sign with the grade they’re starting (or their age) and what they want to be when they grow up. Smiles’ answer this year was “happy” which is pretty much the best thing ever!

Anyhoo –  here we go, homeschool: year 5, day 1!

7:30 – Up & at ’em, unfortunately. Wish I could sleep later…I am NOT a morning person. While I make and drink my coffee I talk Boo through melting some chocolate and pouring it into molds to make candy so she feels special spending time with me and “cooking” which is one of her goals this year. Bonus – I have  to try a piece once it’s done or she’d be sad. Yay chocolate! Plus there’s almost always some math going on when we cook, so we get to kill two or three birds with one stone. 🙂

8:00 – Boo works on teaching Smiles the letter D while they color printable pages together, then Smiles makes some freestyle art with Kwik Stix before proudly putting together her alphabet puzzle. (At which point I consider our preschool activities for the day completed.)

9:00 – I come across our wiki sticks while trying to find the sight word bingo (that’s apparently missing) so I take a little time my 3 littlest girlies to play around with those (Apple’s version of play = try to grab and eat them while I try to NOT let her grab and eat them). Boo teaches me about the life cycle of a butterfly. 🙂

Delight Directed homeschooling - incorporating LOTS of what my girls are excited about learning, such as learning to cook! | Running With Spears #homeschool What unschooling looks like.10:00 – Play some Starbound with Boo. Filling her bucket. #qualitytime

10:30 – Artist graces us with her presence at last. 🙂 Poor babydoll had a nightmare and didn’t rest well. Yay for being able to sleep in! We all pile on my bed, I nurse Apple to sleep, and we do our devotions and read a chapter from Key to Extraordinary! (Awesome book!!!)

11:00 – We each get on our computers for a bit, the girls playing games and me checking email and doing all the things.

12:00 – We read a page of Astronomy then pause for a quick hands on activity that gets out of hand and turns into flour all over the kitchen because – kids. 😉

1:00 – Lunch

2:00 – Artist works on math (with CTCMath) and Boo works on reading (With MaxScholar and Ultimate Phonics)…the main  subject each of them is needing to focus on growing in.

3:00 – Artist makes play-dough and they all play.

Homeschooling with lots of arts education for my sweet artist. Day in the life of an eclectic homeschooling family! | Running With Spears #homeschool #unschool3:30 – Neighborhood friend pops by to play. We all duck into the bathroom to check out our new star projector which is pretty much an epic fail. Bummer.

Throughout the day, Smiles makes tons of artwork, and watches a bunch of Little Einsteins. Apple rolls around everywhere and tries to see how many ways she can already get into mischief at just 6 months old. I also drink at least  three cups of coffee, move the freezer meal from the fridge (where it was defrosting) to the slow cooker so we can all eat dinner, and…

Well at that point the day got away from me. On day 2 Boo made gummy bears in the morning instead of chocolate, we didn’t have an astronomy activity and didn’t make play-dough, so I managed to fit in an art lesson instead. We read some of Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods and did some Just Dance. Tomorrow we’ll probably prioritize just devotions, reading together, and math/reading lessons cause Artist and Boo have piano lessons (through skype with their awesome teacher who lives in NYC now!) Hopefully at least one day this week I can carve out some time where we can all, myself included, just sit in the living room and read a book (well Boo can listen to an audio book).

Also on my to-do list for schoolish stuff this year – Artist and Boo both want me to teach them some photography, Artist is about to start a new French curriculum, and I need to encourage both girls to pick a new topic they’d like me to print them some notebooking pages for.

Day in the life on an eclectic homeschooling family! | Running With Spears #homeschool #unschool #delightdirected #studentled Also in our day – my little night owl, Artist, and I typically snag some one on one time together after Boo hits the sack. And she generally reads a least a couple chapters of whatever book she’s into before bed at night – right now that’s the first Heroes of Olympus book.

Hmm, so when I write it all out it kind of seems like we didn’t really accomplish much, but I felt busy all day.

My biggest challenge right now is finding time to write, both on my blog and my novel. And finding any time for myself to relax, read, etc. But anyway, that was our first day. Well first 2 days at this point. And I decided to share our first day of school pics because I can. Plus I think my girls are pretty awesome! 😀

And now Apple just woke up from her little cat nap in my lap, and Mike will be back soon with dinner from Fuzzy’s and I need to get my girls to help me do laundry and clear the table and whatnot so, later gators!

Printable Worksheets for Homeschool!

I’ve been supplementing my girls’ studies with my Help Teaching Pro Subscription from HelpTeaching.com and I’m excited to be sharing my review with you guys!

Supplementing Homeschool studies with HelpTeaching.com | Review by Running With Spears #printables #printableworksheets

HelpTeaching.com is a website with tons of printable worksheets, online lessons, tests,  customizable bingo and word search printables and more for grades PreK-12. It offers resources for many subjects, including English language arts, math, science, arts and music, social studies, and physical education. The Help Teaching Pro Subscription allows you to give up to 100 questions in your custom tests and worksheets, use premium content such as Common Core aligned ELA & math printables, and use printables with high-quality images. It also gives you the ability to have your kids take custom made online tests.

Fall printables from HelpTeaching.com | Review by Running With Spears #printableworksheetsI haven’t actually given either of my girls an online test yet, but I did play around with it. You can either browse questions created by other members, search for questions by keyword, category, or grade, or create your own, which I thought was incredibly awesome! Just for fun, I searched “Harry Potter” and found a bunch of questions that would make some fun tests, including clever math questions that some much more creative than I  members have created!

I’ve loved using the word search feature! My nine year old, Artist, is a huge fan of word searches, so the ability to create custom ones for her is awesome! I decided to start by printing out quiz on 7th grade vocabulary (because that’s around the grade level she’s working on for language arts this year) and then putting each of the words in a custom word search she could have fun with after we went through the quiz together. The tool to create the word search was super easy to use and it came out great! I was quite pleased!

Another fun way I’ve been using HelpTeaching.com came about after a lightbulb moment I had while I was talking to my husband about what has and hasn’t been working in our homeschool, and what we can do to try to make this year better.

early education printables from HelpTeaching.com | Review by Running With Spears #printablesA big thing that I was stressing about is how in the world to help my almost seven year old, Boo, actually learn to read. We spent this past year with that as our primary educational focus for her, and tried so many different programs to help her, with little success. Yes she’s getting a bit better, but one of her big problems is that she just doesn’t seem to care. But she does  think playing teacher is a lot of fun, so we decided to pretend  she’s totally equipped to teach her almost 3 year old sister the alphabet (despite the fact that apparently even though I’ve been trying to teach Boo her letters since she  was 3, she keeps forgetting them).

I decided that every day I’d print out two copies of a letter coloring page from HelpTeaching.com and encourage Boo to teach her little sister all about it and oh my goodness,  this has seriously been the best idea ever! The two of them go off and color the pages and I hear Boo telling her little sister over and over what letter it is and what sound it makes and all that jazz! And finally Boo seems to be remembering her letters! Yay!

help teachingI plan to have Boo “teach” her little sister using lots of the the early education printables on HelpTeaching.com this year, because they could honestly both benefit from most of it (though Boo has been doing great in all her subjects except reading…still, being the “teacher” seems to be great for her, and for me cause then I don’t have to do it 😉 ). In the past I’ve tried searching google for letter coloring pages to use, but these are all in one place, and they’re done well, print in a good size, and all the things…so if you have little kids I definitely recommend that you check them out!
