Homeschool Introductory Science Curriculum Review

ScienceShepherd Intro Science Review | Running With Spears #homeschoolscience #onlinescienceWe’ve been using the Introductory Science program from Science Shepherd.

The program is a complete science curriculum for younger children that covers all the basics from a Christian viewpoint. Each day we watch a two to three minute video and then answer a few questions in the corresponding workbook. There are two levels of workbooks. We’re using Level A which is intended for children ages 6-8. Some days our workbook includes activities such as word finds and labeling pictures, and once or twice a week there are also quick and simple hands on activities that go with the lessons.

The workbook is really for just one child, but I’ve been watching the videos each day with both Artist (age 9) and Boo (age 6) and then having them take turns answering the questions and doing the workbook activities. The videos are all available to watch whenever you want so you can work at your own pace, which was nice because we were all sick for a week and didn’t do much school, but were easily able to double up on our science the next week.

The first couple weeks focus on Genesis 1 and the fact that God created everything and gave man dominion over the earth so that we would take care of and protect it. It felt at first a little more like a Bible curriculum than science, and because my girls already knew the material they lost interest a bit. However, it did point out some really good fundamental truths that are always good to reiterate.

In week four we got to dive into meteorology.

Simple Science Activity - How do storms form? | A reveiw of Science Shepherd Introductory Science by Running With Spears #homeschoolscience

The lessons spend 3 weeks on meteorology and start with the absolute basics, like what it’s called when liquid water (as opposed to frozen water) falls from the sky. We went on to learn about the atmosphere, the water cycle, why we have seasons, how storms are formed, etc.

Simple Science Activity learning about the water cycle | A reveiw of Science Shepherd Introductory Science by Running With Spears #homeschoolscienceOur favorite thing about studying meteorology was the fun, hands on, simple science activities!

Even Smiles who’s only 2 was able to participate in the activity exploring the water cycle by filling one can with ice water and another with warm water then observing the outside of the cans. And everyone loved the activity that helped us picture what happens in the air when there’s a storm. Boo exclaimed, “Science is pretty!” which made me laugh. But she wasn’t wrong, the swirling colors in the water were rather beautiful.

All in all, Introductory Science seems to truly be a great introduction to all types of science, from geology to oceanography to astronomy to life science and more. It seems like the curriculum is really going to hit just about everything. Of course in order to cover ALL THE THINGS in a year, you can’t delve too deeply into any one thing.

Since my girls are both huge science lovers, the videos rarely contained information they didn’t already know, but it is  called Introductory Science so I really should have expected that. Science is also a subject that we typically pretty much unschool. My girls  watch science related shows, do experiments using their science kits, research their favorite animals, look at blades of grass with their microscope and so on. Which means that having them sit down and go through an actual curriculum with strictly educational  videos (as opposed to shows that have more of an entertainment factor) and answer workbook questions was something that felt comparatively boring to them.

I imagine a first or second grade kid who hasn’t yet done much science and is used to more structured school than what we do around here could gain a lot from this course. 🙂

Mom Goals – Photography Edition

With four kids my goals right now are pretty simple…keep everyone alive, the house slightly less messy than a pig pen, and the kids learning some things (possibly where the end of Mom’s patience is, and how not to reach it). 😉

But I also really  want to take more pictures. I tried to convince myself to do “project 52” where I take a picture every week — ideally one pic of each girl, with my real camera. But there’s not enough coffee in the world for that right now.

I’m trying to at least get monthly shots of Apple, and ones of her on each of her first holidays. But I want to get some good spring pictures, too. I missed bluebonnet pics of my girls this year for the first time ever.  Then I determined to take pics in the indian paintbrushes instead, but then they died, too.  🙁

My new goal is to get an updated family silhouette shot before it gets waaay too hot. We shall see whether I manage to actually do  that, though. Wish me luck — or energy, lol!

Kwik Stix to the Rescue!

Oh my goodness, you guys, today I get to share a review of the art supply that has been my best friend lately — after  coffee, of course. 😉

Kwik Stix Solid Tempera Paint sticks | A review by Running With SpearsLast month we received a Kwik Stix 12 pk from The Pencil Grip, Inc. to try out!

Kwik Stix are solid tempera paint sticks  a.k.a. the perfect smash up of markers and paint.

As soon as I opened the package, my kiddos were chomping at the bit to use them!

I went ahead and put an old sheet on my table and had my kids wear old clothes to use the Kwik Stix, since the one down side is that they’re not washable. (It turned out not to matter as they didn’t make a mess, but with a 2 year old using them I still take precautions just to be safe — you never know when she might decide to start coloring the table, or herself, or her sisters, or everything in the world.) 😉

Then I let them go crazy.  (OK so maybe they’re always pretty crazy, but I let them have free rein of their new art supplies.)

Kwik Stix - Fun, mess free paint sticks! Simple enough a 2 yar old can use! |a review by Running With Spears #kidsartsuppliesThey were simple enough to use that even Smiles, who’s 2, didn’t need any help except to get the lids back on all the way. And there was barely any set-up required from me, and virtually no clean up either, which is awesome-sauce!!!

Art made with Kwik Stix - a fun, mess free way to "paint" | Running With Spears #kidsartsuppliesMy girls had a blast exploring the different looks they could achieve depending on how hard they pressed and whether they used the top of the Kwik Stix or an edge.

I was a bit skeptical about the quick dry feature, but it turned out to be totally legit. In fact, when my girls were just pressing lightly it seemed to be almost insta-dry! Apparently you can press harder and then smudge the colors with your fingers, and layer the colors and blend them together etc. which my girls haven’t tried yet, and I suppose that might cause it to actually take the full 90 seconds. But with the art my girls made, not only did I NOT have to try to find spots to let a dozen paintings dry (ugh, that’s always such  a pain, I just can’t even) but they didn’t get any paint on their hands from touching their papers. *YAY*

The novelty of these super easy to use “paint markers” as my kids call them totally saved the day for me! The first day we tried them, my girls were thrilled to have something special to do since so much of the attention had been on baby Apple. But the day the Kwik Stix really  saved was the first day my husband had to go back to work.

I was still in a lot of pain from having a c-section, and hadn’t figured out how to juggle having 4 kids (OK maybe I still haven’t, but whatever — I’m sure I’ll have this thing down in about a decade or so).

Anyway, by mid-afternoon I was in dire need of something to keep my older 3 happy and NOT needing me for anything and I saw the Kwik Stix so I tossed them on the table with some construction paper and some snack packs of animal cookies for good measure and crossed my fingers!

Lo and behold, my kids were super happy and colored nicely long enough for me to get a nice reprieve and make it until it was close enough to my husband being home that I could see the light at the end of the tunnel and mentally declare myself capable of actually  doing this crazy “Mom of 4 kids” thing. *Whew*

Kwik Stix for Bible Art Journaling! | Running With Spears #illustratedfaith #bibleart A week or so ago, I finally got a chance to do a little Bible Art Journaling and tried using the Kwik Stix and LOVED them for that, too! They’re seriously my new favorite art supply to use in my Bible!

When I applied them lightly, you could see through them plenty well enough to read the text beneath, they didn’t wrinkle the page at all, and barely  bled through to the other side!

Plus they were a lot of fun to use! 😀

I added the METALIX Kwik Stix to my art journaling supplies wish list because I think they’d look awesome, too!

And now for the super exciting news! I’m having a — wait for it…
